THURSDAY WINNERS

Another excellent Thursday Night runs our win streak to 6 and our NFL mark to a stunning 16-4. North Carolina came from behind late to make it a game and was clearly the right side tonight. Some questionable officiating allowed the Hoakies to escape with the W but the Tar Heels did end up covering. The legend of Tim Tebow continues to grow in Denver as he once again led an overmatched Denver squad to a last second victory. We're in prime position for a huge weekend, stay tuned for a possible Friday play tomorrow.

THURSDAY'S WINNERS

We'll be visiting the beautiful high country in Northern Arizona this Thursday with limited internet access so here are the locks for our favorite day of the week! The NFL Thursday slate kicks off this week and we fully expect the Chargers to continue with the momentum the built in the 4th quarter of the Green Bay game. In the college game, two of the toughest teams for us to pinpoint this season square off as Virginia Tech visits Georgia Tech.

SATURDAY'S CARD

Not a whole lot that catches our eye this first Saturday in November however there is plenty of value in our plays tomorrow. We're on the Hawks again tomorrow just because it doesn't make any sense. The latest game of the century takes place tomorrow night as LSU at Alabama square off in the national semifinal. These two teams are nearly equal in all areas so we'll take the points. Don't be shocked to see a 3 point Alabama victory. Good luck!

MR. THURSDAY NIGHT

Not a real exciting matchup on paper tonight as Florida State visits Boston College however as we all know by now, sports gaming makes everything just a little bit better. I have gone back and forth on this one as the line has fallen two points in the past few days. In the end, we decided to go with Florida State after being burned by Boston College a couple of times this fall already. Laying two TDs on the road on a Thursday Night can be a bit scary so I'd rank this as a low end play. Good luck.

THURSDAY PILLOW FIGHT

We've got a lightweight bout this evening in the shithole known as Tucson, Arizona as UCLA makes the short trip to the desert to face the Arizona Wildcats. The only positive thing I have ever heard said about this city comes from Bone Thugs in their classic, "Ghetto Cowboy." As for the game, expect things to get brighter for the Wildcats now that Mike Stoops has been returned to his mental institution. Good luck tonight!

MONDAY NIGHT MADNESS

We've got a rare NFL lock for you this evening after an average college gaming weekend. The New York Jets tonight host what looks to be a bottom 3 team in the NFL in the Miami Dolphins. The boys from South Beach will struggle to score more than 10 points on a good Jets defense and Rex Ryan will get Shonn Greene cranking on the ground. Look for the Jets to cover this number in a low scoring, AFC East clash. Our record for the year now stands at an impressive, 37-22-2.

SATURDAY'S CARD

A tough loss last second loss last night but we were on the right side with Cal. We've got a good matchup tonight as Boise visits Fresno. Boise doesn't appear to be nearly as explosive on offense this fall after losing their top 2 WRs to the NFL. Their inability to strech the field will lead to lower point totals and less covers in 2011. Tomorrow is shaping up to be a day of unexpected upsets in college football so once again taking the points will be the play in the majority of our games. The value of Iowa getting 4 against a terrible offense is just too good to pass up. Look for Michigan to hang 50 on Northwestern and finally pull away late, 51-34. Nebraska will return the favor this week and take a crumbling Ohio State team behind the woodshed in their Big Ten home opener. Finally, one of our favorite teams this year, Washington State travels to LA to battle UCLA. The Cougars will continue their resurgence and win this ballgame outright. Good luck to all.

THIRSTY THURSDAY

Plenty of sports to follow tonight as the Yankees finish off the Tigers, the NHL season opens up and of course Thursday Night College Football. Tonight the Cal Bears travel to Eugene, Oregon to take on the Ducks. After an opening loss to powerful LSU, Oregon has reeled off 3 straight wins while averaging 60 points a game. Cal is coming off their first loss of the year, a 31-23 setback to Washington. We're betting on Cal enduring the opening storm Oregon will throw their way and hanging around long enough to cover the 24 point number.

It's that day of the week again and we look to extend our red hot start with a non-conference matchup between North Carolina State and Cincinnati. NC St. looked awful two weeks ago in their loss to Wake Forest while Cincinnati enters the game 2-1 which includes a loss at Tennessee. Look for an ugly game tonight between two bottom rung bowl teams. We'll take the points in this scenario. Season record: 19-7-1. College record: 12-7-1.

MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

We look to build on our 6-0 NFL season mark (18-7-1 overall) tonight as the St. Louis Rams head to the Big Apple to take on the New York Giants. The Rams look to be without Steven Jackson which will put even more pressure on second year quarterback Sam Bradford. The Giants can not afford an 0-2 start in the tough NFC East. This figures to be a tight battle until the late stages of the 4th quarter when the Giants will secure the cover.

It's our favorite day of the week and we have an excellent top 25 match-up tonight on ESPN as LSU travels to Starkville to clash with Mississippi St. Through the first two weeks of the season, LSU has looked like the best team in the country but tonight will be a bigger test than their opening week wijn against Oregon as Mississippi St. figures to be a dark horse in the tough SEC. Looks for the Bulldogs to hop out to an early lead however the talent and depth of LSU will eventually win out as they cover the number in the fourth quarter. We will be back Saturday to continue our opening season roll which is backed up by our 15-4-1 mark.

SOUND THE ALARMS

A 2-0 evening for Mr. Thursday Night puts the season mark at 7-2-1. Another excellent matchup on Friday Night as Missouri returns to Tempe, the scene of their 2010 Insight Bowl loss as they take on Arizona St. Missouri was unimpressive last Saturday in their win over Miami, OH. Arizona States takes the field after 10 days off. The heat figures to be a factor despite the late kickoff time with expected gametime temps near 100 degrees. If Missouri is truly the 21st ranked team in the country, they will cover this spread easily. It has been two years since ASU won a big game. They may win this one, but they won't cover the number.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL RETURNS!

College Football is back in full force today and we here at HC&P could not be happier. Coming off another successful season in 2010, we are looking to top 6% winners this fall. Today we have 5 locks to release that will build on our strong 1-0-1 start after Baylor's thrilling victory over TCU last night. We have decided to stay away from the LSU/Oregon game as there are far too many questions with both rosters to merit a wager. Good luck this season to all my fellow degenerates, kaff-kaff!

#1-WISCONSIN BADGERS

The Wisconsin Badgers, coming off a Rose Bowl in 2010 enter 2011 with even higher expectations as Russell Wilson has landed in Madison.

Quaterback figured to be a question mark this spring for Wisconsin until Wilson arrived from North Carolina State and instantly gave the Badgers one of the top 3 signal callers in the conference. The ground game, as usual will be very strong behind a huge offensive line. Super sophomore James White and junior Montee Ball will power the offense as both will likely top 1,000 yards rushing this fall.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Badgers get a huge bonus as medical redshirt Chris Borland (09 Big Ten Freshman of the Year) returns at linebacker. Cornerback Antonio Fenelus returns after picking off four passes and breaking up an additional seven in 2010. Free safety Aaron Henry also returns and is a competent center-fielder for Bielema.

The non-conference schedule should be a breeze with only Oregon State likely to force the Badgers to play a complete 4 quarters. The Big Ten slate is highlighed by the clash with Nebraska and trips to Michigan State and Ohio State in late October. If Wisconsin gets through October in good shape the league will be theirs as November finishes with Purdue, at Minnesota, at Illinois and Penn State. Prediction: 11-1 overall; 7-1 in conference.

Friday, September 2, 2011

#2-NEBRASKA CORNHUSKERS

Nebraska enters the Big 10 this year with high expectations as Bo Pelini will have a suffocating defense and explosive ground game at his disposal.

Taylor Martinez is back behind center for his sophomore year after rushing for 965 yards and throwing for 1,631 more in 2010. If Martinez can stay healthy he will have two solid targets in Brandon Kinnie and Jamal Turner. Kinnie and Turner will have to replace the team’s leading receiver from last year, Niles Paul who has since graduated. Rex Burkhead will likely get the majority of the carries at running back.

Nebraska's defense looks tough as usual with perhaps the best defensive line in the country led by Jared Crick. The team’s leading tackler, middle linebacker Lavonte David, returns along with Will Compton. Also of note, Nebraska hit it big with several highly ranked corner back recruits who may seem time this season.

The Huskers will start 4-0 with 3 home games and a trip to Wyoming. The Big Ten did Nebraska no favors as they don't play Illinois, Indiana or Purdue, three of the weakest teams in the league. The Big Ten season opens up with a likely title game preview against Wisconsin. Prediction: 10-2 overall; 6-2 in conference.

Thursday, September 1, 2011

#3-MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS

Michigan State was the most over-rated team during most of 2010 however this seasons Spartan squad is poised to be the best team in East Lansing since the early 90s.

Quarterback Kirk Cousins is perhaps the conferences premier returning signal caller after he threw for 2,825 yards and 20 touchdowns last season. Cousins key targets, Keshawn Martin, BJ Cunningam, and Keith Nichol are all back this fall. The top 6 rushers from 2010 all return as well with Edwin Baker, who rushed for 1201 yards last season figuring to carry the bulk of the load.

Coach Dantonio does have some concerns on the defensive side of the ball with the departed All-American linebacker Greg Jones leaving the biggest hole to fill. In the secondary, Johnny Adams returns after an excellent sophomore season where he intercepted three passes. Trenton Robinson returns as free safety and is the team’s leading returning tackler.

In September, Michigan state will face off with 3 cupcakes plus Notre Dame. The game in South Bend figures to be a stern test against a much improved Irish team. In conference, the Spartans have a trio of tough road games at Iowa, Nebraska and Ohio State. Wisconsin visits Michigan State late in October in what could be a Big Ten Championship game preview. Prediction: 10-2 overall; 6-2 in conference.

#4-OHIO STATE BUCKEYES

A damaging off season for Ohio State can not end soon enough as the Buckeyes attempt to reload after losing their coach, their star qb and multiple players to suspension over the past 4 months.

Luke Fickell has a huge hole at quarterback that he hopes to fill with either Joe Bauserman or true freshman Braxton Miller. A good offensive line returns seniors JB Shugarts, Mike Adams, and Mike Brewster. Dan Harren is back at running back but will miss the first 5 games due to suspension. Look for a running back by committe scenario with Rod Smith, Jaamal Berry, and Jordan Hall all sharing time.

Only four starters return on defense including defensive lineman Nathan Williams and John Simon. The linebacking group is extremely young and figures to have several freshman see playing time. Travis Howard and sophomore Dominic Clarke take over at the corner positions in what looks to be a shaky secondary.

The Buckeyes have a tough early challenge when they visit a Miami team in what is looking to be the "In-eligi-bowl." Colorado visits Columbus to round out a 4-0 September for Ohio State. The Big Ten schedule kicks off with a bang when Michigan State visits OSU and the following when when OSU travels to Lincoln, NE for the first time. Wisconsin visits the Buckeyes in the middle of the season and as usual, Ohio State will finish with Michigan. Prediction: 10-2 overall; 6-2 in conference.

#5-IOWA HAWKEYES

The 2011 Iowa Hawkeyes come in under the radar after a disappointing 2010 which saw them lose 5 games by less than 7 points.

Iowa's offense looks to be one of the better offensive units in the conference with a veteran offensive line, a QB with big game experience, an all-conference wide reciever and a star in the making running back. James Vandenberg takes over for the departed Ricky Stanzi and has WR Marvin McNutt back as his main target. Marcus Coker will run behind an offensive line that looks to rival Iowa's famed 2002 offensive line.

The Iowa defense has been good to great every year for the past 10 seasons however there are major holes in this years edition. The defensive line must improve on a terrible 2010. The linebackers are young and there is little depth behind them. The Hawkeyes secondary showcases all Big Ten corner Shawn Prater and return specialist Micah Hyde.

Iowa will get off to a quick 4-0 start which includes a win over Big East favorite Pittsburgh. The Big Ten schedule is favorable and features a year end clash against Nebraska. Michigan State visits Kinnick Stadium for a second straight year the week after Michigan comes calling. Prediction: 9-3 overall, 5-3 in conference.

#6-MICHIGAN WOLVERINES

Brady Hoke takes over in Ann Arbor after the failed Rich Rod experiment and looks to restore the good name and pride that has previously defined Michigan football.

Denard Robinson is back behind center after an up and down 2010. Michigan's main challenge in 2011 will be keeping Robinson healthy. His style is conducive to taking big hits which is the main reason why Hoke will attempt to keep Robinson in the pocket more this fall. Michigan's undersized offensive line wants to run the ball between the tackles this season which means running backs Michael Shaw and Vincent Smith will need to be durable.

Poor defense is what eventually doomed the Rich-Rod era and things don't look to get much better right away. The Wolverines will will return to a standard 4-3 alignment this fall which should help defensive tackles William Campbell and his running mate Mike Martin in getting back to making plays in the offensive backfield.

Michigan hosts 4 non-conference foes including Notre Dame and an under-rated San Diego State team. The Big Ten slate looks managable despite finishing against Nebraska and Ohio State (both also in Ann Arbor). Prediction: 8-4 overall; 4-4 in conference.

#7 NORTHWESTERN WILDCATS

Pat Fitzgerald returns for another year in Evanston after 3 straight bowl appearances. One has to figure that at some point, hopefully soon, the big boys will come calling to pluck Fitzgerald away from Northwestern.

Dan Persa, who arguable is the best QB in the Big Ten, returns after his 2010 campaign was cut short due to injury. Questions remain if Persa will actually be healthy enough to compete at that same high level this fall. RB Mike Trumpy contributed as a freshman and will see an expanded role carrying the ball this year. Persa should end up carrying the ball less than he did in 2010 due to the possibility of further injury, and as a result, Adonis Smith will see more carries.

The Northwestern defense looks to be around the league average however they do return 3 of 4 starters in the secondary. The battle in Evanston has always been keeping opponents points off the board. This does not figure to change in 2011 as the Wildcats will be involved in several high scoring shoot outs.

Northwestern opens with a good test at Boston College, a game that will likely be determined by the health of Persa. The other 3 non-conference games should be wins for the Wildcats. During Big Ten play, Northwestern misses Wisconsin and Ohio State but travels to both Nebraska and Iowa. Prediction: 7-5 overall, 4-4 in conference.

MR. THURSDAY NIGHT RETURNS!

Football is back and the season opens with a bang as more than a dozen games take place on this wonderful Thursday Night. We'll focus our attention on the Big Ten favorite Wisconsin Badgers as they host UNLV.

UNLV is extremely young all over the field including at QB as Caleb Herring is making his first college start tonight. UNLV hasn't featured a good defense since Stacey Augmon graduated so look for the Badgers to pile up the points as Russell Wilson makes his highly anticipated debut at Camp Randall. Occasionally teams will struggle out of the gate as Wisconsin did last year at UNLV before pulling away late. We look for it to be much easier this time around for the Badgers as they will roll UNLV, 51-10.

WISCONSIN -34 VS UNLV

#8-PENN STATE NITTANY LIONS

Penn State continues their slide down the Big Ten standings this year as questions surround Joe Pa's future. While no doubt a legend to the game, Paterno's time has passed and the program in Happy Valley will be better off once he calls it a career.

Evan Royster has finally graduated after what seemed like an 8 year college career. Silas Redd will take over at running back and will likely be a better version of Royster. Rob Bolden will battle Matt McGloin for the starting quarterback position on an offense that hasn't been a threat through the air for two years now.

The Penn State defense looks solid as usual with linebackesr Michael Mauti, Gerald Hodges, and Nate Stupar all returning. If there is a question on defense, it wiil be on the defensive line where tackles Devon Still and Jordan Hill still are unproven.

The non-conference schedule features a September clash with Alabama along with 3 easy wins. During league play, Penn State gets Nebraska and Iowa at home which should help but they end the season at Ohio State and Wisconsin. Prediction: 6-6 overall, 3-5 in conference.
