Please go to the link below and vote for Mark Reynolds as the "final vote" player for the 2009 MLB All-Star game. Reynolds is 2nd in the NL with 24 homers, has 61 RBIs, 53 runs and 13 steals.

Reynolds also deserves credit for ripping his sorry, half assed team on Friday and backing it up with big home runs in wins on Saturday and Sunday in Colorado. Just go to www.dbacks.com and cast your vote for the Sheriff!

#6-MITCH KING

We continue our countdown of the greatest Hawkeye football players since 1990 with defensive lineman Mitch King.

The pride of Burlington, IA arrived on campus in 2004 as a 3 star linebacker recruit. King saw action as a redshirt freshman and sophmore before becoming a first team All Big Ten player as a junior. During his senior year, King was named 1st All Big Ten, 1st team All-American by ESPN and was awarded the Big Ten defensive lineman of the year.

Expected to be a mid-round pick, King did not hear his name called on draft day this year however was signed by the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent and has impressed by all reports.

King's importance to Hawkeye football goes far beyond the actual playing field. During his final two years, King took on a leadership roll that was instrumental in turning the program around after a string of troublemakers from Detroit ruined the first two seasons of his career at Iowa. Look for Mitch to have a nice NFL career at defensive end, relying on his smarts and big heart, the two things that made him one of the all-time Hawkeye crowd favorites.

COURIER STORY ON NORTH CEDAR

To answer the Courier's question, I'd say North Cedar's future holds great promise such as another round of carharts, cars parked in the front yard and Newport Lights.

North Cedar's future begins to take shape

By JON ERICSON, jonathan.ericson@wcfcourier.com
CEDAR FALLS --- The stories start much the same: "I never thought water would get this high ..."

But a year ago it did, and homes in northern Cedar Falls that have flooded before were destroyed by the flood. Others that had never taken on water before sustained damage.

North Cedar was a neighborhood torn apart by the record-breaking Cedar River flood, then drawn back together in efforts to rebuild and move on.

More than 200 Cedar Falls homes suffered significant damage in the flood. Dozens of businesses suffered damage, and many others took losses when they had to close while the flood passed.

"People have worked hard to clear up the terrible mess they had," said city councilman Tom Hagarty, whose Ward 1 includes all of the areas most affected by the flood.

Once the initial response was over, Mayor Jon Crews appointed a 16-member task force to look at the future of northern Cedar Falls neighborhoods. The Citizens Visioning Committee for Northern Cedar Falls produced a 16-page document filled with challenges, aspirations and goals for the neighborhood.

Despite the committee's work, any vision for the future of North Cedar will not be crystal clear.

"That will be a difficult task. You have the buyout list, but you don't know for sure who is going to stay. We don't know how spotty it's going to be," said Ron Gaines, city developmental services director.

A consultant will come in this fall to look at various aspects of the neighborhood's future. They will come up with ideas for green spaces, look at the business core and a future streetscape project on Center Street.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency granted approval for buying out 122 flood-damaged homes. Over the next year, the city will be negotiating purchase of homes, then demolishing those that are bought.

Cedar Falls gained experience in acquiring flood properties in the 1990s, when several rounds of buyouts removed more than 100 homes, mostly in the Cedar City/Lincoln Street area.

A post-buyout North Cedar will look quite different from Cedar City. Most of the Cedar City area lies in the flood way, the area most prone to flooding that becomes a part of the river, carrying water through the area, during times of flood. After the earlier buyouts, the area became largely empty.

Even before the buyout, the Lincoln Street business community had been fading away. It lost more after the record flood.

Many of the remaining residents of the Cedar City area find their lives more peaceful these days. Buyouts following floods in the 1990s left blocks with only one home still standing. The rest is green space. Wild turkeys and deer come in the mornings and evenings to feed in the open grassy areas where homes once stood.

But Cedar City has a much different dynamic than North Cedar. Much of North Cedar stayed dry during last year's flood. While a great deal of the property lies in the flood plain, only Cottage Row is in the flood way.

Many homeowners in North Cedar thought they were safe from the 2008 flood but were damaged when water reached record levels. Those areas still will have homes in the future.

"A lot of these folks have never seen water up in that area," Gaines said. "It may be a significant amount of time before they see water again."

Jenna Miller lives on Central Avenue. Her family is back in their home after having to demolish part of the structure and rebuild, raising the house up 8 feet --- 2 feet beyond the high-water mark from last year.

She knows her neighborhood will change. In the past few weeks, some homes near her that will be bought out have been demolished.

"It's sad. But I'm happy for the people who didn't want to come back who are glad that they're getting bought out," Miller said.

The visioning committee valued what have always been strengths in the northern part of town: proximity to nature.

In the post-flood world, natural areas may play an even larger role. Lots purchased in the buyout will be required to remain undeveloped.

"There's going to be a lot of green space," said Bruce Merfeld, a 30-year resident of Longview Street and member of the visioning committee. "That's not going to be all bad. It's why a lot of us live out here to start with."

Merfeld already has noticed more wildlife in the neighborhood as many people didn't return after the flood. He's had more birds and appreciates the eight to 10 orioles that now frequent his yard.

While many have moved out of North Cedar since the flood, others have moved in. Merfeld has gotten to know several people who moved in on his street to renovate damaged properties.

The future business scene in North Cedar remains to be seen. Some businesses in the longtime Center Street business core were damaged and won't return. Other parts of the street are not in the flood plain and will continue as always. A streetscape project for the Center Street and Lone Tree Road area is planned.

"It should be a nice gateway into the city," Merfeld said.

An industrial park will begin to take shape this year off of Leversee Road, an area outside the flood plain. That could bring businesses to the north end and spark more interest in the northern part of the city.

"I see potewntial for mushrooming of businesses in that part of town," Hagarty said.

Bringing business to northern Cedar Falls will play a big role in maintaining the long-term stability of the area. While many homes were lost to the flood, areas along Lone Tree and Dunkerton roads hold potential for future subdivisions outside of the flood plain.

North Cedar Elementary School, long a source of pride in the area, remains in operation, having lost only a few students after the flood.

A new neighborhood association will form to give North Cedar a more influential voice at City Hall.

"I would like to see North Cedar recognized and get more attention," Miller said. "It would be nice for the rest of Cedar Falls to open their eyes to what a great place North Cedar is."

The visioning committee wanted to see improved streets and a bike trail to connect to downtown. It also lobbied for a revitalized commercial business district, a wish that may depend more on population and demand than city police.

Gaines said it will take time to see what the new North Cedar will become.

"In six months we'll see how it shakes out," Gaines said of the streetscape and buyout issues.

Merfeld said many North Cedar residents have been too busy getting their properties and lives back in order to spend too much time worrying about streetscapes, development and the future of their neighborhood. But they will move on.

"It's going forward. It's being rebuilt," Merfeld said. "The neighborhood is definitely going to change."

#7-BRAD BANKS

Brad Banks arrived in 2001 as JUCO transfer and spent most of the season on the sidelines backing up Kyle McCann. During his limited playing time, Banks showed glimpses of promise but nobody could predict what would happen in 2002.

After a strong spring game, Banks led the Hawks to a 2-0 start before a disappointing loss at home to Iowa State. Little did we know, that would be the last regular season loss for the Hawks that season.

Banks exploded for 26 passing touchdowns and numerous more touchdowns on the ground while leading Iowa to a 11-1 regular season. Signature wins included a 34-9 beatdown of Michigan (with Coach K and Mr. Thursday night in attendance) at the Big House and a dramatic come from behind victory against Purdue.

Banks was named to numerous All-American teams, won the Davey O'Brien award and finished second in the Hesiman voting to USC's Carson Palmer. Brad Banks led the Hawks to its' greatest season in school history and for that will never again have to pay for a beer in the state of Iowa.

#8-SHONN GREENE

Coming into the 2008 football season, the Iowa Hawkeyes had many question marks including who would carry the load at running back. The time the season had ended, Iowa fans had just witnessed the greatest single season by a running back in Iowa football history.

Shonn Greene arrived on campus in 2006 and recieved minimal playing time as a freshman and sophmore. As everyone has heard by now, Greene was forced to take 2007 off to get his grades up. Often times when a player leaves the program for a year they never come back. It is a true credit to Greene's decication that not only did he make it back, he made it back with a chip on his shoulder.

Greene's 2008 season was history. He rushed for over 100 yards in all 13 games, won the Doak Walker award given to the best running back, was a first team all american and set Iowa rushing marks with 1850 yards and 20 touchdowns.

Green's storybook year concluded when he was the first pick of the third round by the New York Jets. Greene's 2008 season at Iowa helped set the program back on the right track while he carved his way into Iowa Hawkeye history.

STANLEY CUP FINALS PREVIEW

By Mr. Thursday Night

For the second consecutive season the NHL finals is the Gary Bettman special aka the Pittsburgh Penguins versus the Detroit Red Wings.

Pittsburgh and Detroit both cruised through the conference finals after having difficult, 7 game series in the semis. The Red Wings are currently a bit banged up but who isn't this time of year.

I would expect this series to be very entertaining and high scoring. Pittsburgh will have a difficult time slowing down the fast Detroit forwards while Chris Osgood will be average at best against Crosby, Malkin and the rest of the red hot Pens.

Last season when these teams met, the Wings took home the cup in 6 games. An interesting storyline in this series features Detroit's Marian Hossa who left the Pens after last season because he wanted a better chance at a title. He finds himself back in the finals this time against his former mates. This Penguins team is better than last years and I fully expect the Pens to pull the upset and defeat the Wings in an epic 7 game series.

COACH K-FINAL CARD FOR 5/27

We had ourselves a nice little +140 doggy winner with the O's this afternoon and a 2* winner with our A's/M's under. Let's see if we can add to our total and come out ahead this evening to break our little slump. Here is tonight's final card. Good Luck!

MLB
3* Twins -130
2* A's/M's under 7.5, Braves -115, Padres/DBacks over 9 (-120)
1* Orioles +140, Royals -101, Indians -107, Rangers +109

NBA
3* Lakers -0.5/over 203.5 (5.5pt teaser)

#9-JARED DEVRIES

#9 on our top Hawkeyes since 1990 is another Aplington native, Jared Devries.

DeVries was an All-American at Aplington-Parkersburg High School as a defensive end and fullback, racking up over 4,000 yards rushing during his prep career.

Jared was in Iowa City from 1995 to 1998. During his time in Iowa City, DeVries enjoyed a decorated career which included Sun Bowl MVP his freshman year, 3 All-Big Ten first team selections and second team All-American honor his junior year. All told, DeVries ravaged the Big Ten to the tune of 43 sacks and 79 tackles for loss, both Iowa records.

Drafted in the 3rd round by the Detroit Lions, DeVries has had his best pro seasons the past two years. In 2007 he racked up 6.5 sacks and had 3 fumble recoveries. Last year DeVries started all 10 games he played in.

COACH K-5/27

Well we got beat on our 4* bomb with the NBA game easily eclipsing the total last night. They played 3 quarters averaging 46pts/quarter which was what I expected and would have lead us to an under finish, but it was the last 2 minutes of the 2nd quarter that did us in. Both teams combined for 16 points in the last 2 minutes giving them a 62 pt quarter. I'm off a 2 day losing streak and looking to bounce back today. We'll go with a couple of early MLB games that I think at worst split and break even, but I fully intend on taking home both plays for a 2-0 start to our day. I'll be back later with my full card. Check the comments section for any updates and Good Luck!!

#10-AARON KAMPMAN

By Mr. Thursday Night-

In the next two weeks we will be counting down the greatest 10 Iowa Hawkeyes football players since 1990. This list was generated using many factors including on the field performance, importance to the program, state of orgin, etc.

#10 on the list is Aplington, Iowa's own, Aaron Kampman. Kampman was heavily recruited out of high school and came to Iowa City as a linebacker before converting to defensive end after his sophmore year.

In 2001, Kampman was named First Team All Big 10 and had perhaps his best performance during his last regular season game, a 42-24 win over Minnesota. Kampman's 15 tackles and 3 sacks secured Iowa's first winning season and bowl bid since 1997. Kampman finished his career 7th on Iowa's all-time tackles list with 342.

Despite being a 5th round draft pick by Green Bay, Kampman has had a highly successful pro career which has included multiple pro bowl births.

Kampman was a Hawkeye during some lean years (1998-2001) but is one of a few select Hawks responsible for turning the program around after the departure of Hayden Fry.

Wanted to get out my play on the early game. More to come...
2* Astros -114

Fellas, here is the final card for this evening. I'm going against my Nuggets again here this evening but the good thing is we can still win the game and get a Lakers cover. I suggest waiting as close to tip as possible on the side play. I'm almost certain the number will reach 5 by then so you don't have to buy the 1/2 point. Good Luck!!

3* Rockies -135
2* Astros -114, Orioles -105, DBacks -130, Rays -110, Braves -132, Pirates +130, Nationals +140, Yanks/Rangers over 11.5 (-115)

COACH K RETURNS WITH A BANG!!

It's always nice to come back after some time off and drop a 5* BOMB and watch it easily sail over through 3.5 innings of play. Let's just hope we stay hot tonight and really take it to the books.
Living here in Denver and loving the way the Nuggets have been playing lately really hurts me to step out against them tonight, but I just feel we are getting some good value with the way things have panned out recently. Denver has had an easy road playing a mediocre Hornets team and a banged up Mavs team. LA hasn't looked dominant like the regular season. This is a darn good Nuggets team, but they don't play the same on the road and with Smith and Martin banged up and the fact that Denver outplayed LA for 3.5 quarters and still lost, I think we'll see the Lakers go up 2-0 this evening and win this one by 9+. I'd love to see a Nuggets win, but I just don't see it happening tonight. Good Luck!

MLB
5* WSox/Twins over 9 (-120)
3* Astros -147
2* Tigers -140, Nationals -120, Cubs +123, Braves -127, RSox/Jays over 10 (-125)

NBA
3* Lakers -5.5
2* Lakers/Nuggets over 211

COACH K-5/21

Wow, it's been awhile boys but I just got some great info on a game that you will all need to pound right away before the line moves. Word is the sharps will be unloading on this play and it was one I had on my radar to begin with so we'll go ahead and jump on it early! Also have a couple other games for ya and most likely will have more to come along with an NBA play. Good Luck!

5* WSox/Twins over 9 (-120)
2* Tigers -140

NHL CONFERENCE FINALS PREVIEW

We are down to the final 4 in the NHL playoffs and all 4 remaining teams look to be relatively healthy for this time of year.

In the East, the Pittsburgh Penguins lock up with the upstart Carolina Hurricanes. The Canes have won two dramatic game 7's to advance to the Eastern Finals and appear to have some of that magic which landed them a Stanley Cup a few years ago. Pittsburgh defeated Washington and Philadelphia, both in 6 games and appear to be getting strong as the playoffs go on. Both squads feature strong young goaltenders and capable, mobile defense units. Ultimately I think this series comes down to star power and the Pens Malkin and Crosby will be too much for Eric Staal. Pens in 6.

The Western Finals matches up two of the original 6, long time rivals Detroit and Chicago. The Hawks dispatched of Calgary and Vancouver, both in 6 games while the Wings swept Columbus and narrowly escaped Anahiem, winning in 7 games. Most experts would not have expected this deep playoff run from the Hawks, at least not this season. For a young team, they have handled the pressure extremely well. The Red Wings have tons of playoff experience on their roster and have a cup hungry Marian Hossa. I have gone against the Hawks in the first two rounds and they have proven me wrong. I am going for the hat trick here by picking the Wings in 6 which will give us a Pittsburgh/Detroit Stanley Cup Finals rematch.

CAPS SEASON ENDS

It was a fun ride while it lasted but the Caps were eliminated last night by a hungrier bunch of Pittsburgh Penguins. The bright spot in the loss is the fact that the Caps will be a playoff team the next 10 years and with a few minor tweeks, should be a cup contender next season.

In what has already been a Stanley Cup Playoff for the ages, Monday night saw two incredible hockey games. The Caps forced a game 7 with a stunning OT win in Pittsburgh while the Chicago Blackhawks advanced to the Western Conference Finals for the first time in 14 years with a wild 7-5 victory over Vancouver.

I am not going to bet against my Washington Capitals but if I were an impartial outsider I'd be putting some matchsticks down on the Penguins closing the deal tonight. We'll dabble into the MLB and NBA this evening as well. It's a relavitely light sports schedule tonight so the numbers will likely be spot on. 5/8-NHL Preview

Tonight the Eastern Conference takes center stage as the dualing game 4s have Boston and Pittsburgh looking to even their series at 2.

Washington at Pittsburgh-The Penguins looked like a new team in game 3 and E. Malkin finally woke up from a 6 game slumber. Despite dominating the majority of the action, the Pens needed OT to finally get their first win of the series. The Penguins are still in a near must win situation and I expect to see the same desperate team we saw in game 3 which will lead to a 4-1 Penguins win and the series being tied at 2 games apiece.

Boston at Carolina-The top seed in the East is on the ropes after losing 3-2 in overtime on Tuesday. Cam Ward continues to be stellar in goal for the Canes while Eric Staal provided most of the offense. If the Bruins are to tie the series tonight, they will need Tim Thomas to play up the Vezina nomination he recently recieved. Expect another tight game this evening with the Bruins adding an empty net goal late by Marc Savard to seal a 3-1 victory.

MANNY BEING MANNY

Today we have received word that one of the largest douche bags in professional sports history has tested positive for some sort of pefromance enhancing drug. I must say, this is some of the best news I have received since Danny Tartabull signed with the Yankees back in the early 90s. Dating back to his days in Boston, Manny has exhibited traits that would make one think his drug of choice was marijuana rather than steroids. Whether it be cutting off a relay throw from Johnny Damon or accusing Roger Clemens of throwing at him on a pitch that was called a strike, Manny being Manny has always been a douche bag being a douche bag. Enjoy your 50 day vacation Manny. Use this time off to get a haircut and some self respect.
